The Sutherland Shire of Sydney.
During
his first visit to the east coast of Australia in 1770, Captain James Cook went ashore at Botany Bay. During the ships brief stay a crew member, Forby Sutherland,
died from tuberculosis and was buried on the shore of Botany bay.
His unfortunate death was recorded in the ship's log and noted that Captain James Cook named this area "Point Sutherland" in his memory.
